We’ve reviewed a ton of Rockford Fosgate car audio component on this site before, and the story hasn’t changed. Rockford Fosgate makes quality, reasonably-priced product.
Rockford Fosgate offers a wide array of different car subwoofers. Rockford Fosgate subs come in three general categories labeled Prime, Punch, and Power. Subs in the “Prime” category are the entry-level subs while subs in the “Power” series are company’s high-end subs. More of a middle-of-the-road line of subs, the “Punch” series which offer a great value for the buck.
However, even within these three subwoofer categories, there is a significant divergence depending on whether you’re looking for big, window rattling bass, high/loud sound output or deep, precise bass.
For the purpose of this article, we will be reviewing Rockford Fosgate P2 12 inch subwoofers. Punch series subwoofers – particularly P2 12 inch subs – are generally well-liked.
Rockford Fosgate P2 12 inch Review
The P2D4-12 is one of the best 12 inch subwoofers in the “Punch” P2 category, all things considered. It’s a very well-engineered subwoofer with a lot to offer.
The Rockford Fosgate P2D4-12 is designed to produce that bass impact you can feel, assuming it’s properly powered and well-mounted. The P2D4-12 features a sensitivity rating of 86 dB and can handle up to 400 watts RMS. To allow the subwoofer to keep working even under heavy load – for example, when it’s optimized for SPL conditions or during long sessions of hard hitting bass – Rockford Fosgate fitted it with anodized aluminum voice coil formers which are very efficient at dissipating thermal build-up on the voice coil and keeping internal motor structure the subwoofer cool.
As with most Punch subwoofers, the P2D4-12 sports Kevlar fiber reinforced paper cone with high-density rubber surrounds – Kevlar is used in bulletproof vests. It’s extremely lightweight yet rigid and stiff, which makes it the ideal cone material to move large amounts of air without flex or distortion. Additionally, the P2D4-12 uses a new technique to attach the high-density, over-sized rubber surround to the cone that increases available cone area up to 25%, so this sub can push more air for even bigger bass.
When it comes to car subwoofers, Rockford Fosgate has really raised the bar in terms of high-quality budget-friendly subwoofers. Punch subwoofers series represent the perfect combination of price and deep bass, and the P2D4-12 is no exception to that rule.
All in all, the Rockford Fosgate P2D4-12 is a great 12 inch subwoofer for the buck. It can be mounted in standard sealed or vented enclosures. If you don’t know which type of enclosure is right for you, the first thing to do is to read our “ported vs sealed subwoofer enclosures” guide in which we explained in details all the relevant specifications and guidelines of what sets these two enclosure types apart.
The Rockford Fosgate P2-1X12 is a completely done-for-you package. What this means is that if you want the Punch P2D2-12 subwoofer (reviewed above) but don’t want or don’t know how to build an enclosure for it, then the P2-1X12 is for you.
The Rockford Fosgate P2-1X12 enclosure is very well-designed and well-built. It’s loaded with Rockford Fosgate Punch P2D4-12 inch subwoofer (reviewed to above), which is rated for a sensitivity rating of 86 dB and can handle up to 400 watts RMS.
Rockford Fosgate P2-1X12 is a ported hatchback-style enclosure with one Punch P2D2-12 inch subwoofer. It’s made with Rugged 5/8″ medium-density fiberboard which is quite efficient at containing that massive air pressure, and strong heavy bass produced by the subwoofer.
This enclosure is covered with high density industrial-grade black carpet which makes for a clean, finished look. It uses a sophisticated port design which allows for deeper, distortion-free bass.
This is what you can get if you’re willing to shell out some serious dough. It’s one of the most badass, crazy dual 12 inch subwoofer enclosures out there. This beast houses in two Rockford Fosgate P2D4-12 inch subwoofers. Each one of these subs can handle up to 400 watts RMS, say 800 watts for the entire enclosure.
As with most quality subwoofer enclosures, the P2-2X12 dual enclosure is constructed with 5/8″ MDF (Medium-density Fibreboard) to contain the massive air movement generated by the two subwoofers. It’s also covered in high density black carpet that goes well with any interior.
All in all, the box is very well-constructed. The subs are double-secured in the box with screws, and then with the aluminum trim piece around the sub locked in with torx heads.
The only downside we can reasonably think of, assuming you’ve got the cash to throw around, is that this enclosure is quite big. That said, if you’re looking for a quick setup to add deep pounding bass to your ride and don’t mind sacrificing trunk space, then the Rockford Fosgate P2-2X12 is a great option to consider.
