Focal Car Speakers Reviews

We’re always looking for new kinds of car speakers to freak out about – we’ve been around the block many times, so it takes a bit to impress us. One company we have overlooked of late is Focal, which is a French company that makes quite a few awesome high-fidelity audio systems of their own.

From sound systems and loudspeakers for the home to speaker drivers for automobiles and more.

Focal car speakers are probably some of the most solid, dependable we have ever come across. However, they are pretty expensive. If you want to go balls-to-the-wall and actually purchase a pair of focal speakers for your car, you’ll be looking at a $200-$400 price tag.

Focal Car Speakers Review

1. Focal Integration IS 165 Speakers Review

Focal Integration IS 165 car speakersFirst up is the Focal Integration IS 165, which is a pretty solid pair of speakers on its own – it’s probably considered to be the best of Focal’s Integration line of speakers.

Focal applies the same technology they use in their studio and audiophile-grade high-fidelity home audio systems to their Integration line of car speakers.

The Integration IS 165 component system features 6-3/4″ woofer cones made from Polyglass, a material that allows the woofer to  stay rigid and play accurately without resonances or distortion.

Additionally, the separate Integration processed aluminum inverted dome tweeters feature a built-in phase plug which allows to extend and increase high-frequencies response brightness, thus improving stereo soundstage.

Moreover, you can also adjust the tweeters and aim them toward the driver position for better stereo imaging.

Unlike many component speakers on the market with external crossovers, the IS165 speakers are equipped with built-in crossovers. This means, no crossovers to mount. Built-in crossovers can save a lot of headaches compared to separate crossovers that require mounting them in the right location in which they won’t vibrate or get wet.

The IS165 speakers are an awesome upgrade over stock speakers. They can handle a great deal of power (70 watts RMS) and they are highly sensitive (rated for 92 dB). With that being said, you can pair them up to a powerful external amplifier or even to a stock head unit and still get a decent sound quality.

They sound quite clear and don’t distort even at high volume levels. However, if I had to pick some criticisms for these speakers, I’d have to say that they are slightly lacking in bass performance, which is due to their relatively narrow frequency range.

If you are not a bass head, or if you are willing to forfeit bass for sound clarity, then IS165 speakers would be a great buy.

2. Focal Access 165 CA1 Speakers Review

Focal Access 165 CA1 coaxial speakers reviewDespite their high price tag, the 165 CA1 are some of best selling focal coaxial car speakers on the market. These speakers have an excellent sound imaging.

Focal likes to brag about its patented inverted-dome tweeters, which act like small woofer cones, dispersing high frequencies evenly with fine resolution and exciting high dynamics. The majority of the brand’s tweeters still feature this technology.

These tweeters can be pivoted and aimed toward your listening position for ultimate stereo imaging.

Focal Access 165 CA1 speakers feature stiff, woven glass-fiber woofer cones which allow for accurate mid-bass sounds.

Moreover, the strong, lightweight speaker frame offers plenty of open space for unimpeded cone movement and quick heat dissipation, along with plenty of venting to cool the voice coils.

The built-in crossovers on the other hand ensure a seamless distribution of frequencies to the woofers and tweeters, which results in an extremely natural sound.

If I had to pick any cons, it would be the price – These speakers are quite expensive compared to the most speakers we reviewed on this site before, and $220 a pair can be difficult to swallow.

3. Focal Access 165 A1 SG Speakers Review

Focal Access 165 A1 SG Speakers reviewThe brother of the “165 CA1”, the two pairs of speakers are quite identical. The only difference between them is that the “165A1 SG” are component speakers while the “165 CA1” are coaxial speakers.

We have already explained in details the difference between these two configuration, but I’ll go ahead and remind you of the main differences between them since we’re all friends here, and I’ve got the time.

Coaxial speakers (also known as : Full-range speakers) combine all the drivers in one single basket/unit (tweeter, woofer, super-tweeter, crossover …etc).

In their very simplest form, they consist of a woofer for low-frequencies reproduction , and a tweeter mounted onto the woofer for high-frequencies. Component speakers on the other hand separate all their element.

A typical component system includes separate woofers, tweeters, and external crossovers — all of which come built and designed to work with one another.

Component speakers deliver the best sound quality. However, installing them can be a pain in the ass, as each separate speaker, tweeter and crossover needs its own hole & wiring. Coaxial speakers on the other side are very easy to install, simply remove the old speakers connect a few wires and mount the new speakers in.

With that being said, if you don’t want to listen to nothing but the best sound quality, opt for Focal Access 165 CA1 coaxial speakers.

Otherwise, if you’re looking for very easy to install speakers, no muss no fuss, then 165A1 SG speakers are a great option to consider.
