The Polk Audio MM651UM speakers are no exception. They're some of the best marine speakers on the market.

Polk Audio is a company known for its long tradition of making making brilliant-sounding speakers in stylishly designed packages — their MM Series Ultra Marine speakers look awesome and sound even better while withstanding the challenges of sun and water to bring you superior sound on your boat.

Polk Audio MM651UM

The MM651UM speakers are designed and built to meet marine standards. What this means is that they've underwent some serious durability and resistance tests including 600 hours of salt fog and UV testing of the ASTM international B117-03 and D4329-99 standards. That said, you can count on these speakers to provide great sound on your boat for years to come.

These speakers feature honeycomb-textured woven glass fiber composite woofer cones designed to resist and cut down unwanted resonances yet respond very quickly for a crisp and powerful sound. To make these speakers able to handle a great amount of power, Polk Audio fitted them with large diameter voice coils measuring over an inch in diameter.

Additionally, the MM651UM speakers feature 1" soft dome tweeters for precise, accurate high-frequencies reproduction. These tweeters have swivel mounts which allows for precise aiming of sound for improved sound dispersion. The stylish grille that these speakers have built-on tweeters mounts.

Kicker is undeniably one of the pioneers in the mobile audio industry. They were founded in 1973, and they've been making quality audio components ever since. KICKER's Livin' Loud legacy began as a two-man operation, hand-building speaker systems in a car garage.

Over the years, Kicker has managed to make a name for itself in this industry. They offer several top rated marine speakers of different sizes.

So, since 6.5 speakers are the most common size in boats, we'll be looking at Kicker KM654LCW, which are some of the best 6.5 marine speakers that Kicker has to offer.

The Kicker KM654LCW speakers feature a customizable built-in multi-color LED lighting which really makes them stand out from the crowd.

This will add a stylish touch to your boat especially when you're having fun enjoying a night time party on your boat with friends. To change these colors on the fly, you can use invest in a remote control.

Kicker KM654LCW

As for sound quality, these speakers rock. They're a bit lacking in terms of power handling compared to the other speakers we listed here, however their audio quality is among the best available.

The Kicker KM654LCW speakers can handle 65 watts RMS and are rated for sensitivity rating of 90 dB. And as with most marine certified speakers, the KM654LCW speakers are built with weather-proof qualities.

With their splash-and-spray-resisting sealed motors, waterproof polypropylene cones and locking terminal covers, the KM654LCW speakers can withstand tough marine and weather conditions.

They're equipped with durable waterproof polypropylene cones supported by Santoprene surrounds. They're also fitted with balanced dome titanium tweeters designed to deliver spectacular highs that can cut through the noise of the wind, waves, water, and engine roar.

The only downside we can reasonably think of is that these speakers don't come with a remote control which is required unless you plan to keep one color, because otherwise, you'll have to go through some wiring in order to make a color change. Additionally, for the price, these speakers could use some improvement in terms of power handling and sensitivity rating.

Infinity Reference 612m Review

Infinity is another legendary brand in the mobile audio industry. They've been in business for a very long time, and they offer a wide range of speakers for different audio applications. However, as with many speaker manufacturers, Infinity only offers a few marine speakers. Nevertheless, Infinity marine speakers are some of the best rated marine speakers on the market that seem to be well-liked.

The 612m speakers are the best 6.5 marine speakers that Infinity has to offer. These speakers feature a high sensitivity rating of 92 dB, which makes them very efficient at converting power to volume output.

The average sensitivity rating for 6.5 marine speakers is 90 dB, which makes these speakers very efficient than most marine speakers on the market considering that the amount of power required to deliver the same volume decreases almost by half with each increase of 3dB.

Infinity Reference 612m

Speaking of power, the Infinity Reference 612m can handle 75 watts on continuous basis (RMS), which is slightly above average. With their high sensitivity rating, the Infinity Reference 612m speakers put that power to good use, so you don't have to worry about them not sounding loud enough.

As for cons, it's really difficult to think of any. If anything, I'd say that despite these speakers being built with strong, weather-resistant materials including polypropylene for the woofers, UV-resistant rubber for the surrounds, they lack ASTM certification for salt, fog and UV resistance. However, that doesn't make them unsuitable for boat use. They're among the best sounding marine speakers we've come across.

Infinity Reference 612m Specifications
  • Size : 6.5
  • Design : 2-way
  • Sensitivity : 92 dB
  • Power Handling
    • Peak  : 225 watts
    • RMS  :  75 watts
  • Frequency range :  50 - 20,000 Hz
  • Top-mount depth :  2-5/8"
  • Impedance : 4 ohms

JBL MS6200 Review

JBL is an iconic brand in this sector. They make some of the best car speakers, and their marine speakers are no exception. Their legacy stretches back over decades full of innovations and success.

In 1969, JBL was bought by Harman International. Under the Harman International umbrella, JBL has flourished and grew even stronger in the audio business.

Nowadays, JBL is one of the most popular brands, trusted for its audio quality.

The MS6200 are the best marine speakers in the JBL MS series. They feature a simple design that would go well with most boats.

The downside, however, is that these speakers are lagging behind the competition in terms of power handling. Their continuous power handling is only 60 RMS watts.

JBL MS6200

Their sensitivity rating is 91 dB, which is slightly above average.Despite their weak power handling capability, the JBL MS6200 can still sound great, but not as great as the other speakers operating at 100 RMS watts and have a high sensitivity rating.

All in all, the JBL MS6200 speakers are a great drop-in replacement for factory speakers.

JBL MS6200 Specifications
  • Size : 6.5
  • Design : 2-way
  • Sensitivity : 91 dB
  • Power Handling
    • Peak  :  180 watts
    • RMS  :   60 watts
  • Frequency range :  50 - 20,000 Hz
  • Top-mount depth :  2-3/4"
  • Impedance : 4 ohms

Pioneer is another pretty big name in the mobile audio industry. They offer a wide collection audio components including speakers, subs, amps, and receivers. They're praised for the quality of their components that are reasonably priced for the most part.

As with many speaker brands we've come across, Pioneer only offers a few marine speakers. The speakers in hands (Nautica series TS-MR1640) are the best 6.5 marine speakers that Pioneer has to offer.

These speakers would be a great investment for anyone who's looking for a decent replacement for factory-installed boat speakers without having to spend too much money.

The Pioneer TS-MR1640 speakers feature a senstivity rating of 91dB, which is slightly above average. Their power handling, however, is quite low.

Pioneer TS-MR1640

They're rated for only 30 watts RMS which is way below average. What this means is that depsite their above average sensitivity rating of 91 dB, these marine speakers won't sound as loud as speakers with higher power handling rating, which is actually a must for boat speakers because they perform in an open acoustic landscape.

These speakers feature 6-1/2" waterproof polypropylene woofers supported by rubber surrounds. With a low-end frequency response down to 30 Hz, these speakers can provide full, deep lows. Their The PEI tweeters will give you bright and sharp highs that will easily cut through the sound of the waves, wind, and engine noise.

Despite all the drawbacks, the Pioneer TS-MR1640 speakers are the most affordable 6.5-inch marine speakers available. And as we've mentioned earlier, these speakers would be a decent drop-in replacement for factory-installed speakers running off of a factory or even an aftermarket head unit.

Pioneer TS-MR1640 Specifications
  • Size : 6-1/2"
  • Design : 2-way
  • Sensitivity : 91dB
  • Power Handling
    • Peak :   160 watts
    • RMS :    30 watts

How To Choose The Best Marine Speakers

In order to buy the best marine speakers for your boat, there several things you need to take into consideration.

Power-handling

Whether you're looking for marine speakers or car speakers, power handling is one of the most important factors to take into account. Every speaker ever made is only as good as its ability to turn power applied to it into sound in an accurate, precise way. That said, in order to get the best, well-balanced sound, make sure to match the power rating of your boat's receiver or amplifier to the power ratings of the speakers you're considering. You don't want to under-power your speakers. This will only result in weak performance and sound distortion, but it might even damage your speakers.

When you're looking for what marine speakers to buy, you'll norice that manufacturers like to brag about the Peak power handling of their speakers, which is nothing but a marketing gimmick used to entice people to buy. The peak power handling represents how much power the speaker can handle only in short bursts. What you really want to pay close attention to is RMS (Root Mean Square) which represents the amount of power a set of speakers can handle on continuous basis.

Sensitivity

Sensitivity rating refers to the amount of sound the speakers can yield from the power applied to them. Simply put, the more sensitive your speakers, the less amount of power is required to make them sound great. With that being said, if your boat audio system is powered by a decent head unit, consider speakers with high sensitivity ratings (90 dB or higher). This will make the best match. If you're audio system is powered by a powerful aftermarket head unit or an external amplifier, the you might consider speakers with a lower sensitivity rating, although it's always better to go for speakers a high sensitivity rating.

Best Marine Speakers

Durability

Unlike car speakers, marine speakers must be able to withstand harsh outdoor conditions and be able to handle life on the water. Because these speakers are exposed to sun, water, humidity, salt, moisture, UV rays ...etc, they must be able to withstand all of that and keep sounding great.

Sound quality

The sound quality of your speakers is determined by various factors including their power-handling, sensitivity rating, build-quality, the enclosure in which they're mounted, the environment ...etc.

Because marine speakers operate in an open acoustic landscape which is not acoustically perfect, they need to be loud and be able to cut through the engine, the water, and the wind.

By taking all the variables we distilled above into consideration, you are set for getting a pair of speakers with loud, well-balanced sound quality.
