Top 9 Best 6.5 Component Speakers

Most people are content with their vehicle’s stock audio system. This is especially true for those who bought higher-trim models who come with upgraded audio systems.

However, for those with older and aging cars, as well as those who couldn’t afford to buy a high-trim variant of their car, their vehicle’s audio system leaves a lot to be desired.

Luckily, there are numerous ways to make your vehicle’s audio system sound better. Like, for example, upgrading the speakers.

But how do you know what kind of speakers to get? How do you make sure that you’re satisfied with your performance? Well, you don’t. Or, at least, you can’t just yet. Not until you do then proper research. Like, for example, knowing the difference between coaxial speakers and component speakers.

In our given example, the main difference between coaxial speakers and component speakers is that the former puts both the mid-range and tweeter together. On the other hand, on a component speaker, both the woofer and tweeters are separate from each other. Even the crossover comes separately.

With that said, we’ve decided that, if you’re going to upgrade your car’s audio system, you might as well invest in having good sound quality, which is only possible using component speakers. Or, to be specific, 6.5-inch component speakers.

Below, you’ll find our top 9 choices for 6.5-inch component speakers

Rockford Fosgate is one of the oldest and most trusted names in the car audio industry! They were established in 1973.

They offer a wide collection of speakers, subwoofers and amplifier for cars, boats, as well as for recreational vehicles and home use.

With their reasonably-priced quality audio components, Rockford Fosgate enjoyed great success all over the world.

We've got the chance to mount several Rockford Fosgate subwoofers, amps and speakers, and boy they're huge difference makers.

Rockford Fosgate P165SI

The P165SI are the best performing 6.5 component speakers in Rockford Fosgate "Punch" series. They feature responsive polypropylene made woofer cones enhanced by rubber surround that'll stand up to hours of high-volume jam.

These speakers comes with separate 1" dome tweeters engineered to provide clear, sharp highs that will cut through big bass and road noise.

The Rockford Fosgate P165SI speakers can handle a decent amount of power on continuous basis - up to 60 watts - they're rated for a sensitivity rating of 90 dB.

The only downside we can reasonably think of is their relatively narrow frequency range. While many 6.5 component speakers we included here can reach as low as 30 Hz, the P165SI speakers are stuck at only 60 Hz. This can negatively impact the bass fullness.

Infinity Systems is an American manufacturer of loudspeakers founded in 1968. They're one of the speaker brands under the umbrella of Harman International - a US-based high-end audio company - since 1983.

They produce packages for a range of audio applications, including multi-channel surround sound systems packages, in-wall home speakers, marine applications, as well as car audio applications.

The speakers reviewed here, the Reference 6500CX, are the best performing component speakers that Infinity has to offer.

These speakers use 3/4" edge-driven textile dome tweeters that are engineered to yield a amazing levels of detail without sounding harsh.

Infinity Reference 6500CX

These tweeters can be either surface- or flash-mounted using the included mounting cups.

The Reference 6500CX speakers can handle 90 watts on continuous basis. They're very responsive, featuring a high sensitivity rating of 93 dB which makes them suitable for systems running off both headunits and external amplifiers.

If I had to pick some criticisms for these speakers, I'd have to say that their frequency range of 53 - 21 kHz is relatively narrow compared to the other speakers in the same category, which can cover low frequencies down to as low as 30 Hz and high frequencies of up to 23 kHz. This makes the speakers leave a lot to be desired, particularly in terms of bass.

Kicker makes some of the best sounding car speakers, and the 40CSS654 speakers are no exception.

They feature 6-1/2" polypropylene woofers with polyester foam surrounds, and 3/4" titanium dome tweeters that are capable of revealing every detail of your music.

Morel’s reputation has been built by creating high-value and high-quality speakers. That’s why even if one belongs to their entry-level component speakers, the Maximo, we thought of including it on our list. Mind you though, the brand’s strength is not the only reason why we decided to add the Maximo to our round-up.

A complete 6.5-inch component speaker set, the Maximo comes with two of each of mids, crossovers, woofers, and tweeters.

What this means is that you get pretty much more of everything without having to pay a whole lot more.

Also, because of how much more you get from the set-up, you can enjoy better audio quality. In particular, the mid-range and mid-bass will see numerous improvements.

Morel Maximo

Also, if you plan on turning up the volume to full, it still won’t blow out the speakers. In addition to excellent audio reproduction capabilities and quality,  the Maximo is also relatively easy to install. You can even remove the tweeter holders to make installation even easier than it already is.

Perhaps the only issue with the Maximo is how you’ll have to make sure that your car has enough room to fit the entire set-up inside.

Labeling something “value-packed” or “affordable” doesn’t necessarily mean that most people can afford it. Sometimes, these terms can be used to describe something that, relative to what it’s supposed value should be at first glance is a lot cheaper.

Take for example, the Hertz MPK 165.3 PRO

The MPK 165.3 PRO is not, by any means, sold in the budget range of products.

In fact, it is one of the most effective offerings that Hertz has available.

It’s built for audio enthusiasts too, which should give you a good idea of how much it will cost. Or, rather, should, because the MPK 165.3 PRO is not as effective as you would think.

Hertz MPK 165.3 PRO

Price aside, the MPK 165.3 PRO would’ve been worth the money even if it was more expensive. The high-quality construction using premium components and materials, as well as the heavy voice coil and magnet, help prove that this is an enthusiast-grade product. Plus, it can handle 220 watts at peak, or 110 watts RMS.

The MPK 165.3 PRO also uses an innovative V-cone design, which works together with the Boundary Free rubber surround and basket to create a visually appealing design that’s also quite functional.

If you’re looking for a buy-for-life kind of component speaker upgrade, the MPK 165.3 PRO is certainly worth a look.

Upgrading your car’s factory speaker system doesn’t have to cost you a lot of money. The JBL CLUB6500C is proof of that.

With a 3-ohm rating that allows it to be powered using your OEM radio -- no need to install a separate amplifier -- this component speakers set from JBL drives its cost even further.

And while it’s not powerful enough to challenge enthusiast-grade speakers, the low, low price means that it’s a substantial upgrade for all but the most finicky of audio enthusiasts.

JBL CLUB6500C

Speaking of the set, the CLUB6500C comes with two wooers and tweeters out of the box. Included are also the complete screws, as well as mounting brackets. The only thing left for you to check is if you have the necessary speaker-wire adapters to prevent wiring problems. Otherwise, you’ll have everything you need to install the JBL CLUB6500C inside your car.

Just keep in mind that this is a budget-range product. This means that you can’t expect heart-thumping bass from it, nor is it that great if you want to wake up the entire neighborhood by blasting music.

But still, for the price and how good the sound quality is, the CLUB6500C is hard to pass up.

For those who want nothing but the best, the JL Audio ZR650-CIS has relatively few equals. Unfortunately, that also applies to its price. But again, you are getting exactly what you paid for, and perhaps, even a whole lot more.

Engineered and built in Germany, the ZR650-CSI uses die-cast alloy baskets for its woofers and 1-inch aluminum dome tweeters.

It also comes with Kurt Muller cones and suspensions. In addition to this, it also has rubber-roll surrounds, which, altogether, help the ZR650-CIS produce crystal-clear and detail-rich sound.

The crossovers of the ZR650-CIS too are well worth noting. This is especially because of the premium-quality parts used in its construction.

JL Audio ZR650-CIS

A good example is the US-made Mills resistors, which were then mounted onto an extruded aluminum heat sink, as well as segmented air-core inductors and polypropylene capacitors.

Customizable up to 20 settings, the ZR650-CIS can and probably will blow you away once you’ve finished setting it up and turned everything up to full volume.

Another budget-friendly offering, but this time from a company that most outside of the car audio circles don’t know. Mind you, despite being relatively unknown, MB Quart has been around for decades, and are known for making solid products at attractive price points, which just happens to include the MB Quart ZC1-216

A set of four speakers (two tweeters and two mid-range speakers) with their respective crossovers, the ZC1-216 also comes packed with mounting hardware.

A for build quality, the titanium dome tweeter helps guarantee impressive performance even at higher levels.

At the same time, this helps ensure minimal distortion as well. But that’s not all.

MB Quart ZC1-216

The large radiating dome and high-output speaker results in bigger and smoother audio, while the removable phase lens allows you to customize the sound stage as you please, or according to the mounting location.

The lightweight aluminum voice coil also helps give you the peace of mind of not having to worry anymore about the speaker from shorting out or overheating.

As an added bonus, the MB Quart ZC1-216 was built with ease of installation in mind. You can probably do it yourself, although we still suggest consulting with a professional to help minimize any potential problems in the future.

Why component speakers sound much better?

They separate woofers and tweeters

Full-range speakers consist of a woofer for the lows, and a tweeter mounted onto the woofer to produce the highs, all combined in one speaker. Combining all the drivers in one unit is a convenient way to get great sound in a single opening.

The downside, however, is that the the woofer and tweeter are both compromised to some extent in this arrangement. Additionally, a tweeter mounted on top of the woofer cone will always, at least to some degree, interfere with the sound waves produced by the woofer.

A typical component system consists of separate woofers, tweeters, and external crossovers — all of which come designed to work in conjunction with one another.

In component speakers, the woofers and tweeters are mounted separately from each other, so that each component can operate to its full potential, eliminating the problem of the tweeter impeding woofer performance. This also allows you to mount and position the tweeters for optimum imaging and sound-staging.

They use external crossovers

Component speakers use external crossovers to route sound frequencies to the correct driver - lows to the woofers and highs to the tweeters - so that each component gets only the range of frequencies it's designed to play. Thereby, you'll enjoy distortion-free, more efficient sound reproduction.

best 6.5 component speakers

They can handle more power

Component speakers are often built with high quality materials and can handle a great deal of power than their same-brand coaxial counterparts.

They'll sound great running off of your aftermarket headunit, but they'll really shine when powered by an external amplifier. The trick here is to avoid under-powering your speakers. If you want your component speakers to really sing, feed them enough power.

In case you don't intend to add an external amp to your car audio system, then make sure you get a pair of component speakers that can perform well on just the headunit.

Coaxial vs. Component Car Speakers

Final thoughts

Component car speakers are great, but they’re not perfect. For people who prefer to have the loudest of low and high notes, other options are better.

However, even if the bass and high notes of component car speakers aren’t the “best”, they are the ones that will allow you to listen to a wide range of tones. This allows you to enjoy a more well-rounded audio experience while driving around in your car.

Another big benefit of using component car speakers is that they significantly improve your vehicle’s stock audio performance at a low, low price.

Hopefully, our round-up of the best 6.5 component speakers can help you decide on which component car speakers to buy. This is because we can guarantee that you won’t go wrong with your purchase if you ended up with any one of the 9 component speakers that we recommended.
