The Infinity REF65ccIX is one of the best selling 6.5 inch car speakers set on the market. We have come across a ton of you who have used Reference speakers and swear by them.

The Infinity Reference 6522IX speakers feature a high sensitivity rating. They are actually rated for 93 dB. That's quite high. That said, the Reference 6522IX speakers will sound good even when paired up with a low wattage factory headunit.

They have excellent upper and mid-range response, with about as good of lows as you can expect from a 6.5" speaker.

The Alpine SPR-60 is going to be the most expensive pick of the lot by far. Alpine Type-R speakers are designed for people who like to turn it up.

These babies can handle up to 100 watts on continuous basis. That’s impressive.

So if you are into loud sound and heavy bass then find yourself a 110 watt amp or so and these speakers will be ready to truly rattle some eardrums.

Alpine SPR-60

Otherwise, If you don’t care neither about loudness, nor about bass, then running these speakers off of your headunit is enough to notice the difference they can make in terms of sound clarity, crispness and brightness.

Alpine SPR-60 speakers are certainly better than average. But not up-to par with other speakers that cost an arm and a leg ($300+). However, unless your car comes with an already outstanding premium audio system, these speakers should provide a substantial upgrade.

However, it takes a good amplifier (as with all speakers with great power handling) to bring out the full potential of these speakers.

The SPR-60 speakers are 6-1/2″ in size, but they will also fit 6-3/4″ openings. They feature multi-layer hybrid fiber woofer cones that deliver decent bass response. Alpine isn’t afraid to push the envelope.

They adapted the surround, originally developed for their subs, to these speakers, so you get consistent, extended cone movement that pumps out a lot of air.

The SPR-60 speakers are equipped with silk tweeters that deliver smooth, bright highs. You’ll probably hear details in your music that may have been missing before – particularly if you’ve never replaced your factory-installed speakers.

Moreover, Alpine mounts an EQ ring in front of the tweeters to help disperse the highs for the extra sound stage. Plus, you can swivel the tweeters to focus the sound better for your driving position.

    • Not audiophile quality. Its mid to high range can be somewhat harsh.
    • Bass is good but not deep or strong. It still needs a subwoofer to bring out the woomph.

Some high-end car speakers can cost up to $300+. JBL GTO prices range between $50-$120. This stood out to us as not being too cheap, but not expensive either.

JBL GTO629 speakers are built to handle a great amount of power on a continuous basis. They are also very sensitive. The downside, however, is that they are a bit weak when it comes to the lows.

While most 6.5 inch car speakers we reviewed here before can reach as low as 35 Hz, the GTO629 speakers are stuck at only 53 Hz.

Pyle is another entry-level car speaker brand that offers cheap car speakers.

No one will argue that Pyle PL63BL speakers are very cheap, but you get what you pay for.

They are actually quite good on the highs and mid-range, and if that’s all you need (ie. if you have a separate sub-woofer or don’t listen to heavy bass music) then you can’t beat the value.

That said, if you listen to music with any significant amount of bass these speakers will start to distort at mid-volume level and just sound bad any louder than that.

That’s due the their narrow frequency range.

Trust us, if that’s what you’re expecting in this price point you’re going to be in for a surprise.

These speakers aren’t by any means the worlds greatest speakers, but they are going to be a pretty major improvement over any stock speakers your car came with.

Advantages of Upgrading to Aftermarket Speakers

Whether you are an audiophile, a bass head or just an enthusiast who wants to crank up the volume and belt out the lyrics of your favorite song, take a look at replacing your factory installed car speakers.

Dollar for dollar, replacing your stock speakers with aftermarket ones is one of the most cost-effective ways to better sound quality. Granted, with good car speakers on board, you’ll be fully immersed in a pleasurable atmosphere of brighter highs and beefier, punchy lows.

Plus, you’ll probably hear details in your music that may have been missing before.

In the market, you’ll find various car speakers of different sizes and brands. If your existing factory speakers sounds muddy and muffled, a new pair of 2-way or 3-way speakers will provide that extra crispness and detail you’re looking for.

Otherwise, if you are planning to build your ultimate car audio dream system, then component speakers should be a part of it. No matter what your plans, better speakers will bring out the full potential of the audio gear in your car.

Having said that, you may be wondering what makes brand-name speakers better than factory-installed speakers? Design and materials.

Better designs — better sound :

Unlike vehicle manufacturers, car audio speakers manufacturers” main concern is sound clarity. They are always experimenting and pushing the envelope to come up with new technologies and build better sounding speakers.

That said, you’ll hear the difference that commitment makes when you mount brand-name speakers in place of the factory-installed ones.Brand-name car speakers are built with high quality materials and feature sophisticated designs. Most aftermarket speakers sports multiple drivers including woofers and tweeters, mid-ranges, or even super-tweeters, which results in a clear, well-balanced sound.

Each one of these drivers is built to accurately reproduce a specific segment of your music’s sound — the woofer for the lows, the tweeter for the highs, and so on. That’s the reason why brand-name speakers are able to deliver music details that have always been part of your music but remained hidden behind your sub par factory-installed speakers.

Additionally, most aftermarket speakers are equipped with highly efficient crossover circuits that are much more advanced than what you’ll find in stock speakers. The crossover filters ensure that the right frequencies go to the correct driver, so the speaker operates efficiently and deliver smooth, well-refined sound.

Better materials — long life and improved performance :

Aftermarket speakers are built with high quality materials that won’t fall under excessive use, temperature, moisture and stress that car speakers are exposed to. These materials aren’t just durable but also allow for superior sonic performance. Aftermarket speakers hold up very well over time when compared to stock speakers.

    Brand-name speakers — the affordable option :

There are many ways to improve on your vehicle’s audio system. However, replacing your stock speakers with brand-name speakers remains the most cost-effective and affordable ways to better overall sound quality. And even a modest investment in a humble pair of speakers will make noticeable difference.
