Best 3 Way Car Speakers

3-way speakers are a great way to get awesome sound out of your speakers without getting tweeters or a subwoofer.

I get it.

It’s so much easier to get a decent triaxial speaker (and much cheaper) than getting the whole sound system.

Everything is already tuned perfectly.  Plus you’ll get a much deeper sound with 3-way speakers than if you just got a component speaker for you car.

Here’s my list of the top 5 best 3 way car speakers.

1. Pioneer TS-A1676R Speakers Review

Pioneer TS-A1676R car speakers reviewThis is the newer version of the TS-A1675R (listed above). These speakers were introduced to the market in the late 2015.

They feature a new highly rigid Multilayer Mica Matrix Cone structure optimized for wider sound dispersion with deeper bass, and a new tweeter designed to deliver an improved range of mid to high frequencies and produce optimized sound at higher volumes.

Both, the new (TS-A1676R) and the old version (TS-A1675R) are made with the same materials and feature the same characteristics. They’re also priced more or less the same.

The main difference between them is the frequency range. While the TS-A1675R speakers are rated for a frequency response of 35 – 31 kHz, the TS-A1676R speakers feature a relatively wider frequency response of 32 – 40 kHz.

2. Pioneer TS-A1675R Speakers Review

Pioneer TS-A1675R reviewPioneer TS-A series speakers are some of the best selling car speakers on the market. They seem to be well-liked, and that’s no coincidence. These speakers are very well-made.

They produce well-balanced, satisfying sound with full bass, clear mids, and accurate treble. And most importantly, they’re reasonably priced, which makes them more than enough for any economy to mid-level sound system.

Pioneer TS-A series speakers come in different sizes including 6X9 and 6.5 inch. They feature multilayer mica-matrix woofers, lightweight dome midrange for brighter vocals, and a new aggressive cosmetic design.

The thing we love most about these speakers is their sensitivity. The entire line of TS-A speakers can produce as much as two decibels higher output than competitive models with the same amount of power.

You won’t be turning heads with ground-shaking bass, but you’ll be enjoying clear music that sounds much better than stock.

4. Kicker DS693 Speakers Review

Kicker DS693 6X9 3 way speakers reviewKicker is one of the most authoritative brands in this industry. They don’t play around when it comes to sound and build quality. And their slogan “living loud” isn’t an overstatement by any means.

The DS693 is one of Kicker’s best selling pair of 3 way car speakers out there.

The DS693 are very well-made speakers, and would be a great investment for anyone who’s looking for a solid pair of 3 way speakers that can handle a relatively large amount of power on continuous basis.

The Kicker DS693 speakers are rated for 70 watts RMS, combine that with their impressive sensitivity rating of 92 dB and you get speakers that can rattle some eardrums if properly powered.

The Kicker 3-way DS693 6″x9″ speakers use stiff polypropylene woofer cones supported by heavy-duty polyester foam surrounds. Their 2″ poly dome midranges brings out the depth and dimension of musical instruments, while the 1/2″ balanced dome tweeters belt out the high-frequency details, giving your music energy and ambiance.

If I had to pick some criticisms for these speakers, It would be their narrow frequency response. While most 3 way speakers we listed here can reach as high as 30 Khz or even 40 Khz, the DS693 speakers are stuck at only 20 Khz.

However, since frequencies over 20 khz are beyond the range of humans hearing capabilties, most people won’t be able to notice a difference. All in all, the DS693 speakers are a great upgrade over stock speakers.

5. Polk Audio DB691 Speakers Review

Polk Audio DB691 6X9 3-way speakersThis is another great pair of 3 way 6X9 speakers by Polk Audio. The DB691 speakers are very well-engineered. They feature plenty of Polk’s exclusive technologies.

The Polk Audio DB691 are marine certified, which means they’re built with high quality materials to withstand the harshest environments, making them a great choice for use in both cars and boats.

These speakers are equipped with polymer/mica composite woofers supported by durable rubber surrounds. Their Liquid-cooled 1″ silk/polymer dome tweeters use powerful Neodymium magnets to deliver bright, accurate highs.

Polk Audio went a step ahead and fitted these speakers with 3/4″ dome super-tweeters to cover ultra high frequencies.

The built-in two-way crossovers keep the high and low frequencies flowing to the proper drivers for a well-balanced, clear sound.

On top of everything else, the dB speakers feature stainless steel mounting hardware and muscular ABS grilles that will add a stylish touch to your car’s interior.

The Polk Audio DB691 speakers require a ton of power to sound great. They’re rated for 100 watts RMS. So, if you hook these things up directly to your car’s stereo receiver, you’ll be disappointed.

There is simply no way a stereo receiver – whether an aftermarket or factory-installed one – could cleanly drive these 6X9 speakers if you want to hear them as they were intended by the manufacturer.

What is a 3 way speaker?

3 way speakers – also referred to as triaxial speakers – consist of three different sound drivers, the woofer for the lows (aka bass), the tweeter for the highs (i.e : a cymbal, a tambourine, or a flute), and an extra component called the mid-range, which reproduces the mids.

The mid-range component covers mid-frequencies such as human voices, trumpet, or saxophones. It performs a major role in balancing and translating mid-frequencies to sounds most natural to the human ear.

So, the question we want to answer is: For people who have access to dozens of 2-way speakers, are 3-way car speakers really worth the upgrade?

Do they sound better than 2-way speakers? What’s the difference between 2 way and 3 speakers? Let’s find out.

Do 3-way speakers sound better than 2-way speakers?

Well, this is not an easy question to answer. It’s actually a question with many facets and tons of possible answers.

Although it would seem that splitting sound frequencies into 3 ranges (lows, mids, and highs) would increase the accuracy of the music reproduction of a speaker, there are many other factors that should be taken into consideration.

Such as how well the crossover is “tuned”, how well the other sound drivers are matched to each other, the listening environment as well as the speaker build material and design, not to mention the type of music you like playing.

2 way and 3 way car speakers sound more or less the same in full-range setups. However, when it comes to component systems in which each driver is mounted separately, 3 way speakers tend to sound way better than 2 way speakers.

This doesn’t mean that a cheaply made 3-way speaker will outperform a well made 2-way speaker.
